Monumental cock up
I can only describe what followed the Uyuni trip as the most monumental cock in which I took my own incompetence to a new level. Since leaving Cusco nearly 20 days ago everything has been geared around getting to Salta, in Northern Argentina, by the 25th November for the start of the world acrobatic paragliding championships.
It was midday on Wed 24th November when I crossed the border from Bolivia into Chile at the end of the Uyuni trip. Wait, isn’t Chile a different country from Argentina? Well never mind San Pedro de Atacama is only 3 hours from the Argentine border, get the afternoon bus out of town and I’ll be in Salta by midnight.
Oh you mean the bus that only runs on Tue, Fri, and Sun. (Insert many expletives in many languages here)
Still travelling with Sandeep and Ruben, the three of us resigned ourselves to 2 days in San Pedro which I’m sure would have been fine had I not wished to be anywhere else but there. At least I’d still get to see Sat and Sun of the championships.
So we filled the days with visits to Valle de la Luna, Valle de la Muerte, and midnight sandboarding, eventually getting into Salta on Friday evening.
- A 7 am start on Sat to get the bus to the launch site of Dique Cabra Corral,
- Except the first bus arrived at 9.30, took 1.5 hours to get there and ……
- It was the wrong place. The launch site had been moved 30 mins back towards Salta.
- By 11:30 I had been dropped off by the bus driver at the correct place but ….
- Still faced a 1.5 mile walk down a country lane to the event site.
What excitement when I finally rounded the last bend, saw people milling about everywhere, and ran down to the landing zone just in time to catch …….. the **@*$@# PRIZE GIVING.
The competition was actually a day shorter than published on the web site, and due to a forecast of strong winds they’d stopped flying at midday on Sat.
I’m too upset to write more and will remain here in Salta until I love the world again.
Hasta luego

On the other side of the world someone was opening an envelope with their new Mint card inside.

Ed, you’ve definitely got the title of this one wrong. “Business as usual” or similar would be far more fitting.
Wait a minute – didn’t you organise a trip with us last year to see the RedBull AirRace? Didn’t we travel for 4 days through the jungle to get there? Wasn’t it called off & we didn’t see anything fly at all? At least it was good training for Salta…
ps. I thought Chile etc were a few hours behind us in time, not a month ahead?
Ed, you seem to take perverse pleasure in sharing your tales of stupidity. It reminds me of a friend (and this is not about me), who went out for a load of beers, decided to sleep it off alone in his car, while asleep he had an unfortunate accident. Now and this is my point, if he was alone in his car, how come all of his friends know about this tale of woe.
Dizzy, it’s not perverse pleasure…Ed is a truly selfless person who is choosing to make his woe a vehicle for our ‘bonding’
Ed, maybe you WERE a month early & they were just practising. I think you should definitely go back on 25th November to make sure. Please let us know how it goes.
By the way, I was slightly worried that your latest adventures might actually be more exciting than my recent desk move. I’m glad you proved me wrong. I include a link here so that you can see the excitement for yourself. http://picasaweb.google.com/mikeypullen/MikeySDesk
Beats salt flats any day.
Diz, I reckon Ed’s probably making most of it up – he can’t actually be that dim, can he?
Midge,
The new desk looks really nice. With that west facing window I think your desk will be a lot less dim than our Ed. Even though it will be dark at your window at 4pm for the next 6 months it will still be brighter then the void between the Sham(bolic) ears.
Ed,
See you on the 21st…or after, as when and if agreed.
5 out.
See you on the 28th…Please come back soon – Arsenal play much worse when you are in the country and The Blues need all the halp they can get at the moment, although the Arse’s last minute equaliser today has helped narrow the gap at the top.
Thankyou for understanding, Zabou. Although I must remind you all that I am not actually in South America, but in a the small cupboard under Mikey’s desk with access to an online photo library and photoshop. Can’t believe he didn’t spot me in the move.
Ah, well, you know how messy things get. I did think there was a funny smell…
Ed this is me and Mum tapping in to your extraordinary aventures after a fairly mundane/knackering day on Brixton Market. Sounds like youre having fun …….keep it up! Love,Cath and Dolly
PS When u back?
